Really sad news today. Bergman was probably my favorite director. It was his films "Persona", "Wild Strawberries", and "Cries and Whispers" and the French New Wave films of Godard that really got me into foreign film. This is a tremendous loss for world cinema.

Wicker Park Fest 2007 - Man Man, The Thermals, Prefuse 73 (Live in Chicago, IL, 7/28/07)
- Wow, what a great deal. The Wicker Park and Bucktown Chamber of Commerce sponsored the annual Wicker Park Fest. For an optional $5 donation, I got to see Man Man, The Thermals, and Prefuse 73. And if I had come earlier, I could have caught Maritime and Centro-Matic too. Oh well.

Man Man was fantastic. They played a frenetic and energetic set tonight. I came late, but they played several selections from 'Six Demon Bag'. "Black Mission Goggles" was a highlight.

The Thermals - Here's Your Future (live at Wicker Park Fest 2007)(video)I hadn't heard The Thermals before in concert. "Here's Your Future" and "Pillar of Salt" really rocked!

Unfortunately, they scheduled Prefuse 73 simultaneously on the South Stage while The Thermals were playing on the North Stage. Luckily, I was able to catch the end of their set, which was a very chill way to close out the early part of my Saturday night.

Chromeo - Tenderoni (video), Lindsay Lohan arrested again, Ja Rule and Lil Wayne - Uh Oh (video), Lollapalooza After Party?
- Chromeo's video for Tenderoni is up. Yummy electro delivery service.

- Lindsay Lohan arrested again
Oh Lindsay, you really done did it this time. Is that three strikes yet? - More free publicity: Lil Wayne and Ja Rule arrested in NYC, just as they release the video for Ja's new single, "Uh Oh"...
The timing was not the least bit suspicious.
- This Lollapalooza After Party was billed in an e-mail as a "Daft Punk and The Rapture After Party". Kinda misleading, although there are "special guests" that are supposed to be there. One can always hope. Hopefully Justice and Uffie decide to make the trip over here. Busy P, Kavinsky ("
Testarossa Overdrive") and SebastiAn ("
Ross Ross Ross") will be there so it should still be a sweet party. You can apparently RSVP at the aforementioned link to avoid the $15 cover the day of. Speaking of the Ed Banger crew, if you haven't seen the video for Justice's D.A.N.C.E.:

The Decemberists with the Grant Park Orchestra Live at Millennium Park, Chicago, 7/18/07 (pics and video)
...or how I got to touch Colin Meloy. The Grant Park Music Festival kicked off with The Decemberists featuring the 82-member Grant Park Orchestra conducted by Sean O'Loughlin. Why does Chicago rule? The Grant Park Music Festival is apparently the nation’s only free, municipally-supported, outdoor summer classical music series.
This concert culminated a limited five-stop orchestral tour for the Decemberists, which started off at the Hollywood Bowl with the LA Philharmonic on July 7. It also is part of the 25th anniversary celebration of Metro, one of Chicago's most beloved music venues.

First, here's a pic of the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavillion at Millenium Park.

It's hard to tell, but the place was crowded and definitely at capacity, which is 11,000 if you add up the main seating area plus lawn area behind me.

This was the view from the nosebleed center section, last row. The sound was amazing though, thanks to the mindblowing 113-speaker EV sound system.
The Decemberists performed selections from all of their LPs: 'The Crane Wife' ("The Crane Wife 1 and 2", "O Valencia"), 'Picaresque' ("The Infanta", "We Both Go Down Together", and more...see below), 'Castaways and Cutouts' ("Odalisque"), and 'Her Majesty the Decemberists' ("I Was Meant For The Stage", the last song performed with the orchestra). They also performed 'The Tain (I-V)', which was a sublime slice of heaven with the orchestra! I'll get into the encore performance later, when I got a major seat upgrade. =)
The Decemberists w/ the Grant Park Orchestra Live at Millennium Park - We Both Go Down TogetherAfter the terrific set with the orchestra, the night went from simply amazing to otherworldly surreal. After the band and orchestra finished playing "I Was Meant for the Stage", they both made their way to the exits. I slipped into the VIP front section. I knew they weren't gonna leave without doing "16 Military Wives". Sure enough, they came back on stage. Security was telling people to find seats or leave the stage area, but that was essentially a moot point as Colin Meloy called for everyone to come right up to the stage. Thanks for nullifying security's crowd control efforts. =) I was basically right in front of Colin as the Decemberists did their encore performances: "16 Military Wives" and "The Mariner's Revenge Song".
The Decemberists - 16 Military Wives (Live at Millennium Park)This was an energetic and rousing rendition that really got the crowd going. I will never forget the fun "LaDeDa" call and response with the audience.

The Decemberists - The Mariner's Revenge Song (Live at Millennium Park) part 1For this song, Colin also enlisted audience participation by asking us to scream as if being eaten by a whale on the proper cue. Great moments: Jenny Conlee's cute-ish vocals and role playing, Colin and John getting interactive around the floor tom, the swaying part of the song, and Chris Funk running around like a madman cuing for us to scream. The highlight, however, was Colin leaning over from the stage allowing people (including myself) to touch his guitar and suit.
The Decemberists - The Mariner's Revenge Song (Live at Millennium Park) part 2Oops, they weren't done. Here's the outro. Afterwards, things got a bit rowdy as he threw guitar picks into the crowd. I didn't snag any paraphernalia, but I left feeling all warm and fuzzy in a way that only great music can do to you (despite the rain and humidity).

Common feat. Lily Allen - Drivin' Me Wild (MP3)
This is off Common's much anticipated album 'Finding Forever'. I don't know why I'm surprised that it works so well. It's a terrific blend of Common's creative lyrical flow, Lily Allen's playful, wistful vocals, and Kanye's keen production skills. "Love is not a mystery; it's everything." [thanks nah right]
Armand Van Helden - I Want Your Soul (video)
Great video with a late-80s/early-90s feel that kinda reminds me of the

Lebron James impersonates Bobby Brown, performing "My Prerogative" at the 2007 ESPYs
Ok, I missed the ESPYs but I kept hearing about this ridiculous performance by Lebron. I'm sure it's been virally shared to death, but here it is in case you haven't seen it. The MC Hammer circus pants are a riot.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Down Boy (MP3)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Down Boy (video)
This is a song off their forthcoming Is Is EP. I'm not sure why it didn't make the cut for the 'Show Your Bones' LP, because Karen O plays the hard-to-get role to perfection, making for an all-around great track.
White Stripes play a secret one-note show
This was in St. John's, Newfoundland, thus completing their tour of each Canadian province. Come on Jack and Meg; that's awfully stingy. I guess free secret shows aren't what they once used to be.

KT Tunstall - I Want You Back (live) (MP3)

Pitchfork Music Festival Day Three
- I again arrived late to Pitchfork and missed Menomena, Junior Boys, and The Sea and Cake. However, there was still plenty of good music to be enjoyed.

I entered Union Park just in time to see Jamie Lidell. Although he was sans band, he was able to keep the crowd entertained with his beatboxing, his pre-recorded drums/guitar/bass accompaniment, and his sampler and effects box bag of tricks. Honestly though, while he does have some soul, after several songs, the performance became rather grating. So I decided to head to the side stage for what was supposed to be the Cool Kids. However, Craig Taborn's Junk Magic was on stage.

I found their eclecetic, free-form jazz to be a little hard to follow and thus hard to enjoy. I'm certainly no jazz expert though. Their last song was pretty good and I think the crowd wanted more of that rather than the unconventional future-jazz played for much of the set.

Next up was dinner, then Stephen Malkmus unplugged. He revisited some old Pavement songs, acoustic style. The set was about what I expected from him, but I was honestly looking for something to avoid a deep slumber after stuffing my face with chicken sausage pita and tabouli. I headed over to the side stage because Cadence Weapon was supposed to be on. But the Cool Kids were performing now since everything on the side stage was basically moved back 30 to 45 minutes.

Their first few tunes were decent; pretty good old school flava. I wish they had a live DJ though. They later busted out some some nice booty-shaking ish, including their song "88".

Next up was the highly anticipated Of Montreal. They played several selections from "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?" and avoided their "Outback" song. The visual highlight of the festival was certainly the parade of crazy costumes that they kept bringing on stage including Lobsterman,

a multi-headed Kevin Barnes alien, next to the real Kevin Barnes in female S&M garb,

I don't have a pic of the fake blood drinking. (Don't ask). However, I do have a pic of a sporty Kevin Barnes in football pads and S&M gear...

Next up was The New Pornographers.

I was only 10 people back but the lighting made it difficult to take good pictures. Or maybe my aim was a bit shaky because I was so excited. Anyway, they played a fantastic set that really made my day and really my entire festival. Even De La Soul was feelin' their performance. Carl Newman and really all the band members fed off the energy and made every song extra punchy and lively. They started off with a new one, "All The Things That Go To Make Heaven And Earth". Their set included two selections from 'Challengers' including "My Rights Versus Yours" and the Destroyer cover "The Spirit of Giving", (but not "Myriad Harbour"), and several selections from 'Twin Cinema' including "Use It", "Twin Cinema", "Sing Me Spanish Techno", "The Bleeding Heart Show", and "Jackie, Dressed In Cobras", as well as older favorites such as "Mass Romantic", "From Blown Speakers", and "The Laws Have Changed". There was extended applause and the band decided to come out for an encore. They did the fun and apropos sing-along, "The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism".
Decision-time. Klaxons or De La Soul? I had already seen De La Soul before at a fantastic performance in Baltimore. However, I really wanted to see how they rocked a crowd as big as Pitchfork. I thought the Klaxons were nearing the end of their set (but my friend texted me later that they had just started right around 9 when De La started). Oh well, I was not disappointed in my choice of sticking with De La. Btw, I have no idea how they fit the Klaxons fanbase in the small stage area; it must have been quite a clusterf*ck there.

Who's that sitting by the decks? It's special guest, Prince Paul! He DJ'ed for two songs while DJ Maseo joked about his bladder and supposedly left to take a piss. Prince Paul also spit a brief verse before taking a seat. De La did stuff from '3 Feet High and Rising' including "Potholes in My Lawn", "Buddy", "Me Myself and I" (but not "The Magic Number"). Off the top of my head, other songs I remember were "Stakes is High", "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays", and "Oooh" (sans Redman). I thought they were done so I unfortunately left before their encore to beat the "L" logjam. All in all a great festival.

Pitchfork Music Festival Day Two

I arrived at Day Two of the Pitchfork Music Festival in time to see Iron & Wine, who played a terrific set. I know I missed some good stuff, including Califone, Voxtrot, Grizzly Bear, Beach House, and Fujiya & Miyagi, but I can't tolerate the sun, port-a-potties, and crowds for that long. After Iron & Wine, there was a nice stretch of time to go scrounge around for food, trying to find which line was the least ridiculous. I would sincerely like to thank Pitchfork however for making water and alcohol affordable to the captive audience. Much better than the $3-5 I'm accustomed to paying at other festivals.
I didn't care for Mastodon, but I'm glad their set was after Iron & Wine, or else I wouldn't have been able to hear anything.

Clipse rocked the crowd. They did stuff from their "Grindin'" days, songs off their mixtapes, and of course, selections off of 'Hell Hath No Fury' including "Keys Open Doors", "Ain't Cha", "Mr. Me Too", "Chinese New Year", and "Wamp Wamp". They thanked the crowd for their support, alluded to their label troubles, and talked about their new mixtape (We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 3) due out soon and work on their new album beginning next month. VA, Re-UP!

Cat Power sang wonderfully at first, but we were all waiting for one of her infamous implosions. Honestly, I'm not sure how "on-the-wagon" she was. She was very preoccupied with the sound quality and kept apologizing to the crowd for the sound, though everything sounded fine to me (except maybe the drums were a little soft). As she sang, she made signals and gestures to her fellow musicians and the sound board, saying "reverb" and signaling the beat she wanted her drummer to use, etc. We were mesmerized at first, then kinda lulled to sleep. She did quite a few songs from her cover album and didn't play "Lived In Bars", which I though she was gonna close with. I am kicking myself for not leaving early to go to the other stage for what I heard by word-of-mouth was the set of the day: Girl Talk, including a live mash-up collaboration with Grizzly Bear. Damn it!

Finally, there was Yoko Ono. Before Yoko Ono appeared onstage, they showed her
Onochord project/documentary on the big screens around the field. Onochord flashlights were distributed to the audience so that we could participate in sharing this message of love and peace. Finally, Yoko made her entrance to enthusiastic cheers and applause. This would give way to head-scratching and looks of confusion as she started performing, especially among those unfamiliar with her solo work. Now I've heard a lot of weird sh*t in my life (i.e. John Cage, Merzbow, The Boredoms, Alec Empire, Rob Gee, etc.), but Yoko Ono's set was the strangest thing I've ever heard live. While it is enlightening in some ways to hear the primal, guttural vocalizations of a unique avant garde artist such as Yoko, it's hard to say that it is actually enjoyable. Thankfully, the backing band was great, which made her set fairly tolerable. One unique experience was her performance of "Mulberry" with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. She had only performed the song once before with John Lennon and once with her son, Sean, and indicated that this would be her final performance of "Mulberry" ever.
Yoko Ono with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth - Mulberry (video, live at Pitchfork Music Festival 2007)Fairly or unfairly, I give artists like Yoko Ono the benefit of the doubt. However, I was honestly waiting for Peaches to magically appear and perform "Kiss Kiss Kiss" with her, or something else exciting to keep me there. Unfortunately, I think after about a half-hour, only art students and hardcore Yoko Ono devotees were left in the crowd.

Sonic Youth Rocked Pitchfork

Pitchfork Day One featured Slint, GZA, and Sonic Youth performing their respective classic albums. I'm not sure I liked the album format better than the usual set format, but I do see the benefits of it. Unfortunately, I got there late so I missed the post-rock soft-loud dynamic head*fuckery of Slint and their performance of "Spiderland". I also missed the GZA, which I'm really kicking myself for doing. I wonder how out-of-place he felt sandwiched between two giants of experimental rock. Anyway, taking the L into Union Park, I saw part of the GZA crowd leaving just as quite a few people were arriving late to see Sonic Youth. Thankfully, I was treated to about as energetic performance as I could expect from 40-50something-year-olds, which is not a slight on them at all. They really tested the limits of Pitchfork's sound system. Btw, Pitchfork, the sound booth in the middle of the field? Way too close and obtrusive...bad idea.
I had no idea about Kim's age, but she looks good for 54. I was amazed at how she rhythmically threw her head around and wielded her gigantic guitar churning noisy, chunky riffs. I just knew that if she lost her balance at all with that thing, she was totally gonna tumble over. During one song took Steve's drumstick and banged out noisy bar chord riffs, a nice visual and sonic treat. My favorite moments were of course "Teen Age Riot", "Candle", and the orgasmic finale of "Trilogy" (Kim was really getting into that one). I'm not sure what tuning 'Daydream Nation' is in. Sonic Youth often change guitars instead of retuning, and they switched guitars for their encore, where they performed "Incinerate", "Reena", and "Jams Run Free", off their 2006 LP 'Rather Ripped'. The funniest request from the crowd was "Now play 'Sister', all of it!". I wish they could have stayed to play a few more, like "Tunic" or their mindblowing cover of Karen Carpenter's "Superstar". All in all however, it was a great performance.

Rilo Kiley - The Moneymaker (video)
I've been curious to hear where Jenny Lewis would take Rilo Kiley after her rootsy folk collaboration with the Watson Twins. On their first single, Jenny sleazes things up with a slice of pr0n funk/rock. Honestly, I'm not sure what this portends for the rest of the album but I'm looking forward to hearing it.
Eisley - Invasion
Eisley has been totally under my radar this year until I heard their excellent new single, which might be the best song I've heard from them yet. You can stream it on their site, which has been ripped to a downloadable form by someone

Shout Out Louds - Tonight I Have to Leave It (MP3)
The first single from Stockholm's Shout Out Louds upcoming Merge debut full-length, 'Our Ill Wills' sounds quite a bit like The Cure. Btw, if you haven't checked out the balearic remake of "Impossible", you are missing out.

50 Cent - She Wants It (MP3 via hypemachine)
With Timbaland and Timberlake on the track, you'd think that the collaboration would guarantee a megahit. Well, on the one hand, it's safe and formulaic but it works really damn well. Scramble in a blender a typical club-friendly Fiddy tune with "The Way I Are" and "What Goes Around Come Around" to get an idea of what it sounds like.

Tilly and the Wall - The Freest Man (video)
I'm not sure if I like the original or the chill electro house CSS remix better. The video is 80s-ish cheapo effects sing-songy fun.
Interpol - Mammoth (MP3 via hypemachine)
The new Interpol album, "Our Love to Admire", is a grower and is fast becoming one of my favorites of the year. "Mammoth", "Pace is the Trick", "Rest My Chemistry", and "
Heinrich Maneuver (video)" will be on repeat.
The New Pornographers - My Rights vs. Yours (MP3).
While not as strong as 'Twin Cinema' on initial listen, I think I'll grow to really like this TNP album as well.- Live Earth
A 24 hour, 7 continent concert series (yeah they found a band on Antarctica, Nunatak). I wonder if they're really gonna keep track of people's carbon footprint to balance out the airplane and car pollution created by the event, not to mention the massive amounts of power consumed. You can calculate your carbon footprint here and they will supposedly display your name up on a screen at the Live Earth concerts! My ECP (Earth Conservation Plan Carbon and Lifestyle Calculator) is 246 with 6 tons of carbon output. Yikes! Well, it's still below the average U.S. ECP (325).

Martinn - Children Say It Right (MP3)
Robert Miles vs. Nelly Furtado = one of the best mash-ups I've heard this year [via Martinn].
Kanye West - Stronger (video)
The official video for the first single off Kanye's "Graduation", his nice re-work of Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger"- I am still looking for the Wideboys remix of Rihanna's next single "Shut Up and Drive".

While the original version is not a bad tune (it's one of the better ones on B'day), this remix is IMHO a fantastic re-work that preserves the vocal integrity of the original with energetic synth and bass arrangements a la Eric Prydz. A definite floor-filler with a Radio One/UK Club-friendly house beat.
