Stars - Ageless Beauty (video, mov)
Neat video. The teen house party is a variation on a familiar theme. I do like the chiaroscuro band lighting, which accentuates Amy Milan's shiny mascara and lip gloss. However, I have no idea what the large X on her upper left chest is for.

Black Eyed Peas

Black Eyed Peas - Don't Phunk With My Heart

I've always been a detractor of the Black Eyed Peas. To me, they are the antithesis of A Tribe Called Quest, sell-out musicians with glossy production on tracks minus MC or DJ talent. However, I actually dig this Stereo MCs-esque vibe, mainstream-friendly though it is, at least until I hear it for the billionth time on the TV/radio come August. via Stairway

Primal Scream remixed - Screamixadelica

If you haven't heard Primal Scream's 1991 album, Screamadelica, you are missing out on a highly influential album that fused rock with soul and acid house. Thanks to Andrew Weatherall's production, it is an album that has shaped the electronic music landscape from Madchester to Bristol to the whole world. Screamixadelica is a remix of the classic album by infamous mashers/remixers in the same vein as the Chemical Brothers remix album, Flip the Switch.

Go Team interview, Decemberists auction, Scarlett Johansson, more

  • The Go! Team: Pitchfork Interview
The samples were cut and pasted on Pro Tools then it was put through distortion and compression. When we put to tape we put the levels up so it was going into the red. It's quite rare for people to actually strive for that, most people want it to sound as good as possible in a stadium type of way. If it sounds too big I want to squish it down. I had the capabilities to make it all slicked up but no.

This is inspiring. I did the same on Cool Edit Pro.

New Weezer leak

The new Weezer has been leaked...from someone's bladder apparently. 'Haunt You Every Day' is a decent song. The only other songs that come close to being as good as the previously leaked 'Beverly Hills' are 'The Damage In Your Heart' and 'Freak Me Out'. So, what's wrong with that? Well, 'Beverly Hills' is a terrible song. The album is polluted with conventional pop riffs and embarrassingly childish lyrics.

Missy Elliott - The Cookbook tracklisting

Looks like there will be some hot collaborations on Missy's forthcoming LP (Ciara, Pharrell, Slick Rick, Mary J. Blige, Grand Puba, Fatman Scoop, and Tweet. Nice to know that Grand Pub is still alive). 'Lose Control' feat. Ciara and Fatman Scoop and 'On and On' feat. Pharrell are slated to be two of her hit singles, and they've already leaked on ILM (scroll to the bottom; good luck, they're probably gone by now). On these tracks, Missy refines the chunky Timbaland hip-hop electro style that she introduced on 'This Is Not A Test!'. While not as raw or grimey as M.I.A., the beats and production step in the direction of the club without the lyrics losing the realness.

'Lose Control' works into your head subliminally with a catchy chorus, lyrical self-mashing (elements of Work It, 1,2 Step) and her one-of-a-kind call-and-response randomness.
Everybody here getting out of control
Get your backs off the wall 'cuz Misdemeanor said so
Everybody (step step [Ciara whispers subliminally]) (x3)

Mark my words, 'Lose Control' is going to be the anthem of early summer.

Meanwhile, 'On and On' sounds like a soundtrack to a film starring Missy blasting away MCs with lyrical death rays. Pharrell is relegated to the minimal spoken chorus.

Here's a hot lyrical excerpt from the second verse:
Ya'll just rookies, virgins and nookies
Now my competition, you skip or play hooky
Ain't nobody here that can turn the track up
And I ain't done rappers so shut the hell up

Missy Elliott | The Cookbook | June 28, 2005
1.) Joy feat. Mike Jones
2.) Partytime
3.) Irresistable Delicious feat. Slick Rick
4.) Lose Control feat. Ciara and Fatman Scoop
5.) My Struggle feat. Grand Puba and Mary J. Blige
6.) Meltdown
7.) Right One For You
8.) On and On feat. Pharrell
9.) We Run This
10.) Time and Time Again
11.) Gotta Move On feat. Tweet
12.) Mommy
13.) 4 My Man
14.) Tearyeyed feat. Tweet

Prison terms on tap for 'prerelease' pirates

CNET News: Prison terms on tap for 'prerelease' pirates
Yikes!
File-swappers who distribute a single copy of a prerelease movie on the Internet can be imprisoned for up to three years, under a bill that's slated to become the most Draconian expansion of online piracy penalties in years.

The bill, approved by Congress on Tuesday, is written so broadly it could make a federal felon of anyone who has even one copy of a film, software program or music file in a shared folder and should have known the copyrighted work had not been commercially released. Stiff fines of up to $250,000 can also be levied. Penalties would apply regardless of whether any downloading took place...

Invoking a procedure used for noncontroversial legislation, the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved the measure, called the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act. Because the bill already has cleared the Senate, it now goes to President Bush for his signature.

Hello, stranger in Banana Republic

Honestly, sir, I am flattered that you mistook me for a BR employee. However, I'm afraid that even a bona fide BR salesperson would have been unable to help your situation. Firstly, the salespeople do not have magical powers to cause the size shirt you need to materialize out of thin air, the shirt you were so determinedly seeking while sifting through the once-neat pile ten times over with your greasy french fry-eating hands. Secondly, you might be in the wrong store. I'm afraid that no tensile material known to man (neither Lycra nor experimental space program polymers) would be able to flatteringly encompass your corpulent figure. Might I recommend the Sears at the other end of the mall, or perhaps a trip to your friendly neighborhood Walmart?

Prominent leaks: NIN, Aimee Mann, White Stripes

  • Update: NIN's Trent Reznor releases song as GarageBand file
  • NIN - With Teeth
It seems that Trent has adopted a pop sensibility on tracks like 'Every Day is Exactly The Same'. The rest of the album seems like a mix of equal parts Broken, Downward Spiral, and The Fragile, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's a new spin on his old formula. Links are at regnyouth.
  • Aimee Mann - The Forgotten Arm
Aimee Mann's concept album recreates a 70s feel with her warm storytelling, bright and prominent guitar, and mellow keyboards. Supposedly recorded in 5 days, but it doesn't sound like it! It's one of the best albums I've heard this year and might be the best effort yet from Mann. It's not a very daring or groundbreaking album, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.
  • White Stripes - Blue Orchid (MP3)
    Honestly, it sounds terrible.

javascript:var counta=0;var countb=0;var countc=0;var countd=0;var counte=0;var countf=0;var countg=0;var counth=0;var counti=0;var countj=0;var countk=0;var countl=0;var countm=0;var countn=0;var counto=0;var countp=0;var countq=0;var countr=0;var counts=0;var countt=0;var countu=0;var countv=0;var countw=0;var countx=0;var county=0;var countz=0;

To do this, create a new bookmark, and edit the location to include the javascript bookmarklet above. Or just drag this into your bookmarks. When you get to a Rapidshare page with a timer, use the bookmarklet, and voila, instant download. Enjoy!

  • Slashdot: Hitchhiker's Movie is Bad says Adams Biographer
  • Piercing the peer-to-peer myths: An examination of the Canadian experience
    An excerpt:
Although the music industry seems loath to discuss the matter publicly, according to an October 2004 Economist article, an internal music label study found that between 2/3 and 3/4 of recent sales declines had nothing to do with Internet music downloads [8]. That finding was echoed in a Ministry of Canadian Heritage commissioned report which concluded that "[t]he assumption by the recording industry that demand for CDs is fundamentally strong and that Internet piracy is to blame for falling sales is a simplistic reaction to a complex problem ... to place the burden wholly or partly on illegal downloads from the Internet is to ignore a host of other reasons." [9]

The "other reasons" include the growth of DVD sales, which accounted for zero revenue in 1999, but generated over C$170 million in new revenue from 2000–2004 [10]. The popularity of DVDs is surely related to the decline in CD sales and the shrinking shelf space allocated to CDs by music retailers.

Moreover, U.S. census data actually indicates that the number of hours people spend listening to music is declining. Its data suggests that people now spend increasing amounts of time talking on cellphones, playing videogames, watching movies and using the Internet [11].

DJCBOAST - 1,2 Step Fix Up And Stand Up Forward Riddim

Legal DJ Z-Trip streams

From Z-Trip's forthcoming album, Shifting Gears, to be relased on 4/19.
I've got the promo CD and it's quite good. It has less of a mash mentality and features interesting collaborations. It's more cohesive turntablism/hip-hop than previous offerings.

These are Windows asx streams:
Z-Trip - Walking Dead
Z-Trip - Listen to the DJ
Z-Trip - Breakfast Club

You've heard of happy hardcore...this is crappy hardcore

Various - Bastard Rave Party
Missy vs Pink vs Kelis vs Destiny's Child vs Tori Amos vs Tenacious D vs Will Smith vs Rave Party

Happy or crappy hardcore, you decide. But it's very enjoyable. You should play this during The Clockwork Orange '1812 Overture' scene. That would be the ultimate perceptual experience.

Columbia Music Lab follow-up

Quick follow-up to my last post. I think this is a big joke. The bands suck, I listened to about half of them. Downloading the music is actually a punishment, and that's all you get to download: supposed up-and-coming bands that all sound like Offspring/Korn/Limp Bizkit clones. Don't waste your time.

Kelly Osbourne - One Word (Chris Cox Radio Extended Mix)
New track getting heavy Pete Tong buzz on Radio One. Not released in the U.S. yet. To be honest, I haven't heard her earlier work, but this sounds more like Pink than, say, Courtney Love (I know it's a mix and not the original).

Body Poppin'!

  • MPG: Futureshock - Late at Night (video)
Just a patrolman's typical late night beat, with everybody body poppin'! (Thanks kottke).
  • The Electric Boogaloos! (video clips)
Some original flava. From Mr. Wiggles' site:
While the debate still continues as of who is considered the creator of this dance, in my belief and opinion, I believe that BOOGALOO SAM created the dance called "POPPIN" that I have grown to love. The style and complexity of this dance is based on continuos flexing of the muscles to the beat while executing precise and funky angles that are based on many styles created by Sam's group THE ELECTRIC BOOGALOO. these angles provide funky and rhythmic positions for a popper to hit while flexing his or her muscles to the beat.

  • Stiga (video clips)
The French don't just make electro. They're down with the body poppin' too!
  • Update: Entroporium offers an account about the origin of the robot dance
Don't know if anyone can definitively settle this.

(S)ourmedia, Rockers who died at 27, Kelis vs. Iron & Wine vs. Massive Attack, whaaaa?

  • Review of Ourmedia
Well, I am tempering, or rather revoking, my initial glowing excitement for the ourmedia resource with this fairly negative review. In my experience thus far, uploading MP3s (music that I've made myself) has led to empty nodes and zero files shared. I've even written them about it and received no response. I've registered at Ourmedia and Internet Archive as they've said to do. What the hell is going on? My theories: 1) Knowing that users may upload unauthorized MP3s (which I am not doing) they may have a more stringent screening criteria, 2) They may be biased against lossy formats like MP3 (as they demonstrate in their Internet Archive), 3) The whole upload process is buggered. Conclusion: This alpha is light years away from a beta. Well, the delay and the ambiguity renders ourmedia at this time a rather useless resource for serious musicians. There I said it. If they get their act together, they can let me know when they announce their beta.
  • YuppiePunk has an interesting post on rockers who croaked at age 27
  • Mash-up MP3: Kelis vs. Iron & Wine vs. Massive Attack
Amazingly, this mash-up works. Most slowed-down mashes end up in the trash bin, but this one actually holds together. A pretty bold feat to mash R&B and folk, if you ask me.
