Kanye West - Runaway (video)
Kanye's foray into art film is mildly entertaining, but aspirations to a feature-film-quality production are limited by the music video feel. If nothing else, it will whet your appetite for his forthcoming album, 'My Dark and Twisted Fantasy'.
For highlights, try the opening track, which is supposed to be on the new album. Skip to 7:32 for "All of the Lights", which is even better than the previously leaked version, although it's only a 2 minute snippet. It features the addition of Rihanna on vocals. Skip to 4:39, 23:47 and 24:42 for a few new songs not released by Kanye yet. Afterward, skip to 26:53 for "Lost In The World", an extended version of the previously leaked song featuring Bon Iver.

The end of summer in Boston comes rather abruptly. There are too few days to transition from 90 degree to 60 degree weather. Hopefully, you have pleasant memories of summer as autumnal darkness consumes the daylight.
Best Coast starts off this end of September mix with their clever mix of garage rock, shoegaze, and surf pop on "When I'm With You". It's no surprise that they are NME's #1 new band of 2010. The New Pornographers are next with "Crash Years" from their LP 'Together', a return to form for them. Sambassadeur's Swedish brand of Balearic rock/pop on "I Can Try" is perfect for those who still can't let go of summer. Staying on the Swedish theme, Club 8 moves in a new direction with their LP 'The People's Record', fusing their bossa nova and dance pop roots with Afro-beat, Brazilian pagode, and Caribbean influences. "Shape Up!" is a good example of the result.
Janelle Monáe is proof that you don't need Auto-Tune garbage to sell an R&B record. "Cold War" is off her debut album 'The ArchAndroid', a stunning fusion of glam rock, jazz, funk, hip-hop, and R&B. "King of the Beach" by Wavves is a fun noise rock, surf punk tune. Speaking of "fun" and "noise", Sleigh Bells epitomizes these characteristics with their standout track "Tell Em" from their debut album 'Treats'. "Fur-Lined" is off the
free eponymous debut EP by How to Destroy Angels, a new project featuring Trent Reznor and his wife, among others.Back to Sweden with "Come With Me" by Ceo, which is Eric Berglund's solo project as he takes a break from The Tough Alliance. Next up is Cee-Lo's "F--k You", which you probably have not heard only if you have been living under a rock. Don't miss the great
video. If you've had enough of Dr. Luke atrocities like "Tik Tok", "Dynamite", and "California Gurls", Robyn's "Dancing On My Own" is the proper pop antidote. If you think I have a thing for Swedish pop music, you would be correct.Kanye West is on fire. He's been releasing a new song every week or two on his blog and Twitter until the release of his new album. I'm not sure how many of these unreleased songs will make the album, but chances are that if he keeps on this prolific trend, this will prove to be a blockbuster album. "Good Friday" features Common, Pusha T (of Clipse fame), and Kid Cudi. "Say Goodbye to What" by Bullion is a controlled chaos of drums, congas, guitar, bhangra elements, chanting, and disembodied funk. Say what? Yeah. Next, Blonde Redhead's "Here Sometimes" meanders toward a new downtempo electronic sound.
Hailing from Denmark, Oh No Ono reminds us that there is good Scandinavian pop music outside of Sweden. "Internet Warrior" is multi-layered psychedelic indie pop/rock goodness. Is it just me or does "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" sound quite similar to MGMT's "Time to Pretend"? On this track, Arcade Fire laments the deterministic fate of the American landscape, the strip mall hell that is suburbia, whose growth has perhaps only been arrested (but at the same time is made more stark) by the empty shells left behind in the wake of the financial meltdown.
With "Excuses", The Morning Benders have crafted a lovely indie rock/pop tune with a touch of doo-wop à la Del Shannon. Beach House's "Walk in the Park" is the perfect lazy dream pop tune to unwind. The mix closes with the delicate and haunting "Arrow" from The New Pornographers member Kathryn Calder.

R.I.P. GuruBig loss for hip-hop today. Primo may have made Gang Starr great -- having arguably the greatest rap DJ/producer on your tracks will do that for ya -- but Guru made Gang Starr Gang Starr. His purported final letter to fans is tragic and implies a significant falling out that occurred between him and DJ Premier at some point in 2004.

Hi. I'm back. It's cold and rainy here in Boston, but as they say, April showers bring May flowers...and also this nice little weekend mix. I hope you enjoy it, whether you're curled up at home or blaring it from your open sunroof.
Do you recognize the beat from Never Be Your Woman? Remember White Town's Your Woman from 1997? Wow, that's a blast from the past. Wiley improves on the easily forgotten one-hit wonder. You've probably heard the next song, "Ali In The Jungle" in the following Nike commercial.
Kid Sister is back with some dancy fun; don't forget to check out the cool video for "Right Hand Hi" by Colonel Blimp. Next up is the hot new Uffie single, featuring Pharrell. Joy Orbison's "Hyph Mngo" is one of my favorite dubstep songs. The next remix by the xx transforms Florence and the Machine's song into a UK dubstep floor filler.
Caribou's "Odessa" is off their forthcoming album, 'Swim', their long awaited follow-up to 'Andorra'. After that, some new LCD Soundsystem (with an apparent heavy Talking Heads influence) off their forthcoming album 'This Is Happening'. Next, you have probably heard this The Blue Van song from its prominent inclusion as the first Apple iPad theme song. The Temper Trap is next up with one of my favorite songs from last year, "Sweet Disposition", featured in the film (500) Days of Summer and a Chrysler commercial. Next up, a song from the recently released album by Happy Birthday on Sub Pop.
Crookes is not misspelled, if it is referring to a group of lads from Sheffield, England. "Home" is another one of my favorite songs from 2009 from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. It's got a psychedelic California folk rock feel, like the Mamas and the Papas meets Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood. "Compliments" is off of Band of Horses' forthcoming album, 'Infinite Arms', which I'm really looking forward to. The next tune by Lake is a catchy call-and-response song off their 2009 album 'Let's Build a Roof'.
As for Zooey Deschanel, I'm as smitten as ever since (500) Days of Summer. So it goes without saying that I dig "Thieves", her collaboration with M. Ward off their second album. Cults consists of two twenty-something NYC film students, and I highly recommend their debut 7" release, in case bringing back the Shangri-Las was something you thought was impossible (or at least inadvisable).
Little & Ashley's tune is featured in Amazon's cutesy Kindle commercial. Next up is my favorite Jenny Owen Youngs song off her album 'Transmitter Failure'. Last but not least, Pete Droge and Elaine Summers bring you "Two of the Lucky Ones", which features in last year's Zombieland soundtrack.

Ok, I realize it's been ages since I've posted. Thank you, those of you who sent concerned e-mails. Contrary to popular belief, I have not been kidnapped by Somali pirates or succumbed to swine flu.
As you can probably tell by the recent design mini-overhaul, I am moving to Boston soon. I will always love Chicago and I hold a special place in my heart for the city. I also won't rule out coming back...someday.
April showers are supposed to bring May flowers, but not necessarily warm weather when you're talking about Chicago. Hopefully, we can put 40 degrees Fahrenheit behind us for good for a few months. This long overdue transition is the theme for my latest mix.
It starts with the Clipse featuring KanYe and produced by DJ Khalil, a hot clip off their forthcoming album, Till the Casket Drops. There is also a recent remix with Bun B that is floating around, for those who are interested. Next up, Rye Rye hails from my old hood, Baltimore, collaborating on the track "Bang" with M.I.A. Speaking of M.I.A., I can't wait to hear the lyrical wrath that is sure to be lurking in future songs in response to the recent violence in Sri Lanka.
Mike Skinner of The Streets released the funky groove "Trust Me" along with eight other tracks on Twitter. Next up, much anticipated new stuff from Basement Jaxx. They never fail to amaze me as they expand the boundaries of house music. The dancefloor has lacked an anthem this good since...well, since Basement Jaxx last released something.
Oh wait, the Freemasons have made some good dance tunes too. Collaborating with Sophie Ellis-Bextor on "Heartbreak (Make Me a Dancer) = instant hit, even if it's kinda generic. The
video is worth a look. Continuing on the house tip, "Bonkers" features Dizzee Rascal and Armand Van Helden, which of course is going to shatter a few eardrums.C4's "Hula Dancer" is a catchy track that came out of nowhere. It was thrown together for a Scrabble commercial entitled
"Hula". It's part of a series of other vids that includes
"Yoga" and
"Sumo". And if you can find the original artists and songs for each of those videos, I'll be your best friend.Next, get your leather on with the Yeah Yeah Yeah's 'Zero'. Karen, Le Tigre wants their synthesizers back. J/k, I love the way the band can incorporate new sounds and ideas yet still retain their YYY-ness. But I'm probably not the most objective evaluator; Karen O can fart in a mic and I'd probably still listen to it. "Pop Nonsense" by Dogs Die in Hot Cars is probably the catchiest song I've heard this year. Enjoy it now before it's licensed for the next useless cell phone commercial.
"Lose You" by Peaches is a subdued electro slow-jam. Wait, are you talking about that Peaches? I know it's hard to believe, but don't worry. There's still plenty of raunch to go around on her new LP, the not so subtlely titled 'I Feel Cream'. Hint, don't put "Mommy Complex" on your mom's Mother's Day mix.
"Little Girl" features Julian Casablancas of the Strokes. It is from 'Dark Night of the Soul', an somewhat mysterious project involving Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, and David Lynch. The title apparently refers to a treatise by Roman Catholic Saint John of the Cross which describes the loneliness and desolation of a person's spiritual life.
Masha Qrella's forthcoming LP 'Speak Low: Loewe and Weill in Exile' is worth a listen; check out "I'm A Stranger Here Myself". The next tune is "Omar K" by Rainbow Arabia, a California duo (Danny & Tiffany Preston) that you would swear from listening to are not from these here parts. The song defies categorization and will hopefully grow on you as it has on me. It's like Paavoharju meets Gang Gang Dance, but more tribal and eclectic. Moving on, "It's All You" builds from a gentle instrumental intro to a cacophanous neopsychedelic swell. It's a standout tune from I Was A King, who hail from Norway.
Next, Wye Oak is the honorary state tree of Maryland, and also a fairly good Baltimore band as well. Yo La Tengo fans, give "Take It In" a close listen. I've said it once, and I'll say it again: These Scandinavians know how to make catchy music. I especially love it when Hanne Hukkelberg (great Scandinavian name, btw) harmonizes in "In Here/Out There".
"Dear Boy" is a cover of a Paul and Linda McCartney tune from their 1971 album 'Ram' by Bodies of Water. I think I actually like the cover version better. "Kiss Me Again" is a melancholy tune by precocious talent Jessica Lea Mayfield off her debut LP last year, 'With Blasphemy So Heartfelt'.
Despite the name, Chelsea Morrisey of Dirty Mittens is like Morrissey's polar opposite. Her cute, winsome voice on "The Small Things" will bring you some irresistible twee cheer. Mirah's new LP '(A)spera' is her best since 'Advisory Committee' and "Generosity" is only one of many solid tunes. The mix closes out with Sufjan Stevens and the ode to Sofia Coppola he apparently wrote in college.

19. The Love Language - Stars
20. Andrew Bird - Tenuousness
21. Marissa Nadler - Rosary
Here's a special Valentine's mix for y'all, because I luv ya.
The not presumptuously named "The Very Best" is a duo consisting of Esau Mwamwaya (from Malawi) and Radioclit. They kick things off with the calypso-infused "Kamphopo". Next, Three 6 Mafia and Project Pat spice things up with a Santogold remix. Can't wait for Missy's new album 'Block Party' if there are booty-shaking floor-fillers as good as "Best, Best".
Creature is this year's Alphabeat, with a touch of the B-52's and Deee-Lite. They hail from Montreal and they'll shake your ass to "Who's Hot Who's Not". Shugo Tokumaru transcends J-pop with the quirky, psychedelic "Parachute". Lily Allen comes storming back with "Not Fair", a catchy tune from her much anticipated LP 'It's Not Me, It's You'.
Next, self-loathing is never so catchy as when Morrissey puts it to song, as evidenced by "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris". Only stone and steel accept my love. The Harlem Shakes do their best CYHSY impression with "Sunlight", not that I'm complaining. White Denim keeps things moving with "I Can Tell You". Next up, British Sea Power stirs your eardrums with the anthemic "Waving Flags".
I'm looking forward to an official release from New Villager after hearing their exciting 7" "Rich Doors". Transition to Animal Collective's "My Girls", easily the song of the year so far. I can't get enough of it. Try to not sing along with "I don’t mean to seem like I care about material things, like our social stats / I just want four walls and adobe slats for my girls." Is that Zooey Deschanel on another M. Ward track? Why, I believe it is. "Never Had Nobody Like You" starts out kinda like "We Will Rock You" and has yummy distorted "Revolution"-like guitar. The Decemberists ponder marriage and filicide on "The Rake's Song". Really chilling if you listen to the lyrics. Sometimes, I wonder about Colin Meloy. Can't wait for their new album, 'Hazards of Love'.
Neko Case can do no wrong. "People Got A Lot Of Nerve" is the first single off her much anticipated forthcoming album. Chat is a French pianist whose song "Harmony" harkens back to chansons of yore. If "Love Songs" is any indication, Anjulie is set to be huge in 2009. From her roots in Guyana and Toronto, she adds a little L.A. sunshine and creates a brand of pop that is eclectic yet accessible, personal and disarming. Amadou & Mariam take a step forward with their highly enjoyable LP 'Welcome to Mali'. "Sabali" is representative of the gems on that album.
The Love Language are a band to watch closely. Their forthcoming eponymous album is among the best debuts of 2009 and is getting a lot of play on my system. Get your wikipedia ready for Andrew Bird's "Tenuousness" as he waxes poetic about proto-Sanskrit Minoans and Porto-centric Lisboans. Finally, drift away on Marissa Nadler's haunted melodies with "Rosary".

Favorite Albums of 2008
- Ok, here's my long overdue Favorite Albums of 2008 list. A lot of year-end lists suffer from the recency effect. I try to avoid this by keeping a running top 20 list throughout the year, which inevitably ballooons into a top 50, then top 75, etc. I hope you find this list a useful guide to the year of music that was 2008.
Favorite Albums
----------------
1) Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
This stunning debut album is like a leisurely horseback ride through the countryside. Its soothing and familiar qualities belie its complexity and timelessness. It's nostalgic without feeling cheesy or derivative: a down-to-earth tapestry of folk, rock, baroque pop, and alt-country. Don't forget to check out their equally brilliant EP, 'Sun Giant'.
2) Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
A haunting and mesmerizing album borne from heartbreak and sickness. In releasing these songs in their original form, one can imagine a broken soul laying in bed, recuperating and ruminating.
3) TV on the Radio - Dear Science
4) The Walkmen - You & Me
This is the album that I've been waiting for from The Walkmen. Put behind you the notion that they can only churn out a few good songs per album. This is full of the contemplative, moody ballads that you wish they would write a whole album of.
5) Stereolab - Chemical Chords
This is possibly Stereolab's most acccesible album to date. Although stubborn fans and purists may be turned off a bit, it's a fun mix of the usual Sterolab eclecticism in a stew of bouncy synths, horns, strings, loungy/mathy/jazzy elements, and an electronic ye-ye vibe.
6) Love Is All - A Hundred Things Keep Me Up Night
7) Envelopes - Here Comes The Wind
8) Portishead - Third
9) Tricky - Knowle West Boy
This is Tricky's best album since his classic, 'Maxinquaye'. I didn't think Tricky had an album this good left in him. Bristol is back, baby; just don't call this trip hop. One listen to "Past Mistake" will take you back to 1995; but this album is so much more. It's the sound of urban decay with a hint of nostalgia, a sound that deftly blends a dark soundscape of downtempo, dub, electro, reggae, rap, blues, and rock. The songs are well-constructed with solid contributions from relative unknowns that nicely complement Tricky's raspy voice.
10) Beck - Modern Guilt
Pairing Beck with Danger Mouse was a daring idea. The combination works better than I would have imagined. Danger Mouse shows some restraint but nevertheless contributes a solid production effort with his usual bag of tricks: disembodied beats and samples. Beck uses these as a backdrop to craft his best folky melancholic songs since 'Sea Change'.
11) Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III
12) Los Campesinos! - Hold on Now, Youngster
13) Angus & Julia Stone - A Book Like This
14) Santogold - Santogold
15) Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna
16) Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
17) Steinski - What Does It All Mean? 1983-2006 Retrospective
Fans of the old school and cut up need this album. Steinski is a DJ's secret weapon. This album will replace a whole pile of scratched up vinyl in your dusty ol' record bin and obviate the need for that wish list of remaining white labels that you thought you'd never get your hands on.
18) Neon Neon - Stainless Style
Neon Neon is a collaboration between Boom Bip and Gruff Rhys. 'Stainless Style' is a refreshing album that departs from the typical stale formula that plagues most revivals of the 80s synth pop sound. More often than not, they succeed in creating fresh sounding 80s-inspired songs like "Raquel", "I Lust U", and my favorite, "I Told Her On Alderaan".
19) Bajofondo - Mar Dulce
Not to be pigeonholed as electronic tango, this Argentine-Uruguayan group fashions a sexy mix of tango, latin rock, jazz, hip-hop, and loungy downtempo with live and sampled drums, bass, violin, accordion-like bandoneon, and guitar. Don't overlook the solid slate of guest appearances which includes Elvis Costello and Nelly Furtado.
20) Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack
I'll have to admit I'm fairly ignorant of A.R. Rahman's oeuvre, whose Bollywood musical body of work has apparently sold over a hundred million records. I was intrigued upon learning that it was partly M.I.A's appreciation for his work that inspired her to record 'Kala'. Much of 'Kala' as a matter of fact was recorded at Rahman's studio, although they never collaborated until this soundtrack, which runs the gamut from more traditional Bollywood to hip-hop to progressive house.
