The Arcade Fire - Christmas EP

Yikes. I know it's over a month late for Christmas stuff. Anyway, feel free to download the Arcade Fire - Christmas EP from 2002. As much as I love The Arcade Fire, I must admit, this is grating and cringe-worthy. Keep it as a novelty or if you're a completist, but approach with caution (and earplugs or mute button on hand).

Hotness: Unreleased Drop It Like It's Hot remix (Snoop, Pharrell, Jay-Z - R. Kelly diss)

Oh yeah. Read all about the hotness here. The track features a new laid-back, minimalist Neptunes-ified beat. Part of Jay-Z's rhyme: "It's Jizz-ay, homey, you got pizz-ayed/ Take it like a man, the flow ran you off the stizz-age/ Wasting your time trying to sue S Dot/ Tell your lawyer to take the civil case and drop it like it's hot." No official release has been announced yet, so d/l it like it's hot.

Esthero and Outkast, Elvis Costello, Basement Jaxx news

Music News: Esthero's forthcoming album will feature a track with Andre 3000 of Outkast. Her well-crafted, albeit pop-friendly downtempo tunes lack the edge of Massive Attack and Portishead (it's similar to but more consistent than Zero 7, if that makes any sense). Maybe Andre can funk things up. Speaking of Portishead, they also have an album coming out later this year.

Elvis Costello will launch his US tour in March; but no shows in my area. =(

Basement Jaxx will release a Best Of album on March 28 featuring: Red Alert, Good Luck, Romeo, Oh My Gosh, Bingo Bango, Where's Your Head At, Rendez-Vu, Jump N' Shout, Lucky Star, Plug It In, U Don't Know Me, Do Your Thing, Jus 1 Kiss, Flylife, and Samba Magic.

The Shins - Those Bold City Girls

This is the first track from The Shins' 1999 EP, Nature Bears a Vacuum, 'Those Bold City Girls'. The sound is more raw than their Sup Pop releases, with fuzzy guitar and dinky keyboards, but the lyrics and sound are classic, distinctive Shins. The EP is still available from their old record label, Omnibus.

    Eric Prydz remix

For those of you jonesin' for some progressive house, here's a remix from 2004 of a house classic: Eric Prydz feat Adeva - In And Out (Eric Prydz Mix). This tune really rocks your socks, especially at about 3:33 when the chunky electro bass comes in. Almost good enough to forgive him for that 'Call On Me' garbage. (Nah, not quite).

Blogroll review: New Beck video for 'Hell Yes'. Trippy. Looks similar to one of those crazy nonsensical shockwave animations. Compared to the demo that was leaked, one can see what a difference the production makes, for better or worse. Thanks to Stereogum.

    California Stars

What a depressingly cold day. You know it's cold when you can see your breath in the apartment elevator. Nothing like a summery Wilco song to warm things up: Wilco - California Stars (live at Farm Aid 1998). California Stars was written by Woddy Guthrie but not put to music until Wilco did the honors on 'Mermaid Avenue', which also features Billy Bragg. Amazingly, Wilco is not featured on the Farm Aid compilation. Oops.

No, I'm not trying to bait Google. These are the lyrics to this kooky Mylo song! If you liked the original, you will really be rocked by Tom Neville's remix and the synthesized strings on top of Mylo's chunky electro riffs.

    Simpsons Gaydar

Which of these Simpsons characters is coming out of the closet?.  Rumor has it that Patty will, but I have my money on Smithers.  Besides obviously having a thing for Burns, he is an obsequious brownnoser (no pun intended, eeew), like the clingy and ambiguously gay Robin in the 'Batman' TV series.  Why do you think he calls him Boy Wonder and they slide down poles together in tight clothing.  Hmm.  Anyway, here are some Smithers gay references for your perusal.  You can actually put real money on the Simpsons thing and make P.T. Barnum proud.

    Annie

Annie - Heartbeat (left click) | Annie - Chewing Gum (video)

Kylie is out and Annie is in.  Her catchy Norwegian dance singles are already tearing up the charts in Europe and getting played to death at clubs worldwide.  After the Februrary UK album release and the US release later this year, you will probably here more about her in the mainstream media.  Her sound is like Kylie's, with more innocence/vulnerability in her voice and more electro-funkiness in the house-y production.  Enjoy.

    Feist - One Evening

Great winter tune: Feist - One Evening.  Very laidback production and gorgeous vocals.  Leslie Feist is a member of Toronto band Broken Social Scene.  Her debut years back was opening with her high school band for The Ramones.  So how did she go from punk to the downtempo equivalent of Dusty Springfield?  Beats me...but I'm not complaining about the outcome.

My Top 10 Movies of 2004

(possible spoilers, don't say I didn't warn you!)

    10) Shaun of the Dead - I suppose I'm betraying here my soft spot for cult horror movies.  However, even non-horror fans might like his movie since it's an adventure, romantic comedy, and zombie movie rolled into one.  This movie is a riot, especially for fans of George Romero and Lucio Fulci, with its frequent hilarious allusions to great zombie movies of the past.

    9) Fahrenheit 9/11 - Documentary or leftist propaganda? Even many liberals have gotten sick of Michael Moore blowing his own horn.  It's hard to believe this won really won the Palme d'Or, even though it is a quite a well-made and thought-provoking documentary.  Of course, Moore has been known to stretch the truth, which is a headache for both liberals and conservatives.  This movie is no exception.  However, I'm glad that it raises a lot of important questions about Bush, the neoconservatives, and the Carlyle Group's motives in the "War on Terror".  It's just a shame that Moore has been more maligned than Karl Rove, who is an equally shameless and devious propagandist.

    8) 2046 - This was the film I was most eagerly anticipating this year.  It's Wong Kar-Wai's follow-up to 'In the Mood For Love', which was one of my favorite movies this decade.  According to Wong, the idea for 2046 comes from the promise the Chinese government gave to the Hong Kong people: 50 years of no change in its political and economic systems after the 1997 handover by Great Britain.  Chow (Tony Leung) is a writer whose novel describes a mysterious train that leaves for the year 2046, a year/place where people are said to revisit the past and recapture lost memories.  This is mere speculation since no one has returned from 2046.  Chow stays at the Oriental Hotel.  He is a womanizer who relives his past affairs with his old neighbor's wife, Su Lizhen (Maggie Cheung, playing the character from In the Mood for Love), a card shark by the same name (Gong Li), and a high class madam, Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi).  His current neighbor, Jingwen (Faye Wong), is the daughter of the hotel's owner and she encourages him to write the novel.  If you're confused, so was I.  This film was rushed to Cannes, did not receive any awards, and was panned by many critics.  I think there are some good ideas here but not enough for a coherent full-length feature film.

    7) Infernal Affairs - This movie actually came out in 2002, swept the 2003 Hong Kong Film Awards, was one of the most popular movies in Asia, and has already inspired two sequels.  The plot is fairly straightforward: it's about a mole (from a Hong Kong triad) in the police department and an undercover cop within a Hong Kong triad.  While the police chief knows who the cop is and the triad boss knows who the mole is, neither group knows who the traitor is among them, although each group makes this eventual discovery their long-term objective.  Nearly a decade passes and each mole faces profound moral, personal, and professional dilemmas in continuing their roles.  To avoid giving away too much, I'll leave it at that.

    6) The Incredibles - Believe the hype.  This is one of the best animated movies I've seen and is definitely the best thing the Disney/Pixar collaboration has produced.  It's a superb blend of action, humor, and drama.  I felt like the little kid on a tricycle (you know who I'm talking about) while watching this movie.  Mr. Incredible, Frozone, and Bomb Voyage were especially hilarious.

    5) Kill Bill: Vol. 2 - Tarantino closes his two-part tale of revenge with a thoughful character study.  It's more artistic and almost as gory as Vol 1.  The cinematography is excellent, particularly the B&W scene on the porch at Beatrix's wedding rehearsal.  The film reveals Beatrix's (Uma Thurman) development as an assassin under Pai Mei (Chia Hui Liu), her transformation during her pregnancy, her inextinguishable survival instinct, and the violence and jealousy that threatens and finally destroys the love between Bill (David Carradine) and Beatrix.

    4) Collateral - Vincent (Tom Cruise) is a hit man who hires a cabbie, Max (Jamie Foxx), to help him do his dirty work in L.A.  Cruise is a stone cold killer who is blunt but insightful, and almost likable, if it weren't for the fact that his conversation with you probably means that he's going to shoot you in the face the next minute.  Foxx is terrific in his role as a hapless cabbie; he conveys a sense of quiet desperation as he is figuring out how to cope with the predicament he's in.  Director Michael Mann borrows a page from "Rear Window" and "The French Connection" to develop a tense and thrilling climax.  Mann paces the movie well and creates a claustrophobic sense of urgency in the taxicab and a haunting, noirish, apathetic Los Angeles.

    3) Garden State - Actor/writer/director Zach Braff is fortunate to work with a cast that isn't typical for Sundance entries.  Natalie Portman, Ian Holm, and emerging actor Peter Sarsgaard turn in good performances.  Garden State is an endearing story about Andrew (Braff), a struggling actor best known for his role as a retarded quarterback, who returns to Jersey for his mother's funeral after 9 years away with hardly a word to his family or friends.  Subdued from years on lithium and antidepressants, Andrew becomes inspired to take the reins of life after meeting a new, carefree friend, Sam (Portman), and he begins to discover what he has been missing in life.  My favorite scenes are the pool scene and the fireplace scene.  However, I didn't particularly care for the Method Man scene or the contrived ending.

    2) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - I remember when I first heard about the concept for this movie, I thought it would be a contrived piece of garbage.  But writer Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) hadn't disappointed me yet, and he doesn't here either.  If you've ever loved and lost or wondered why it is so hard to forget someone, this movie will have special meaning for you.  Jim Carrey tops his 'Truman Show' performance as Joel and Kate Winslet is terrific as the eccentric Clementine.

    1) The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou - Wes Anderson's genre-bending adventure is my favorite film of the year.  Add action and pseudodocumentary to his usual mix of offbeat drama and tongue-in-cheek dark comedy, and you have a quirky, winning combination.  The cast is strong throughout: Bill Murray brings a unique energy to the screen and imbues his character with the complexity and edginess necessary to drive this rather unconventional mid-life crisis story; Owen Wilson's deadpan delivery as Zissou's possible long lost son works well; Willem Dafoe is funny as a jealous senior team member; Anjelica Huston is a commanding presence in her smaller role, sometimes even stealing scenes from Murray; Cate Blanchett is lovely as a pregnant journalist whose incisive questioning and romantic impassability rub Zissou the wrong way; Jeff Goldblum is hilarious as Zissou's ambiguously bi archrival; and Seu Jorge is a great supporting cast member who helps segue scenes with fun Portugese renditions of David Bowie songs.  Initially, the atmosphere may seem lighter than that of Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums.  However, the humor and quirky plot do not mask the dark undercurrent or detract from the poignancy of the film's climax.  Although the screenplay seems a little bit more disjointed than those co-written with Owen Wilson, the playful randomness is a welcome element in this adventure and I didn't feel too much was missing from Wilson's absence in the writing department.  The set pieces and costumes are appropriately weird and wonderful and Wes Anderson is certainly in his element with effective use of color (i.e. the helicopter scene), music, editing, shot selection, CGI, and mise-en-scene (especially the intro, the entrance and exit of key characters, and the ending).

    Honorable Mention:
House of Flying Daggers, Hero, The Bourne Supremacy, Spider-Man 2, Team America: World Police

2004 movies I still want to see:
Sideways, Finding Neverland, Kinsey, Ray, The Aviator, Closer, Vera Drake, Maria Full of Grace, The Sea Inside

My Top 10 Albums of 2004

    10. Wilco - A Ghost Is Born: A mediocre album from one of my favorite bands.  Tracks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 are good tracks that pick up where 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' left off.  Of course, asking Wilco to top 'YHF' would be like asking the Beatles to top 'Sgt. Pepper's', a nearly impossible expectation.  The rest of the album is hit or miss, and on track 11 "Less Than You Think", they hit a new low: 9 minutes of noise that is neither ironic nor artistic.

    9. Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters: A fun blend of 80s rock, disco, and pop, including a BeeGees-ish cover of "Comfortably Numb" and the neo-country/funk tune "Take Your Mama".

    8. The Killers - Hot Fuss: 80s New Wave interpreted Las Vegas style.  Perhaps their sound is a bit too catchy and derivative of bands like The Cars, and their lyrics are underdeveloped.  But songs like "Somebody Told Me" and "Smile Like You Mean It" are fun crowd-pleasers.  I suspect that they will not have the versatility to develop their sound much and put together a successful follow-up album.

    7. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand: More retro.  As long as retro is in and as long as record companies are desperately searching for the next Strokes or White Stripes, bands will keep churning this stuff out.  Well, at least Franz Ferdinand can write interesting lyrics to go along with their radio-friendly post-punk sound.

    6. Beastie Boys - To The 5 Boroughs: This album is a return to the classic Beasties sound.  "Ch-check it out", "Triple Trouble", and "An Open Letter to NYC" are standouts.  The beats and the rhymes aren't bad, but the album fails to innovate like its predecessors did.

    5. U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb:  U2's best album since Achtung Baby.  "Vertigo", "City of Blinding Lights", "All Because of You", and "Original of the Species" are my favorite tracks.  Though enjoyable overall, the album lacks the edge that made War, Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby classics.

    4. Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News: This is probably the MM album that is easiest on the ears of mainstream consumers.  While it may be more appealing for the radio, diehard fans complain that they've lost some of their raw strangeness.  Nevertheless, the lyrics are still eccentric enough for people looking to enjoy a little something different.  "Float On", "Ocean Breathes Salty", "Bury Me With It", and "The View" are great songs.

    3. Garden State Soundtrack:  Thank goodness for this soundtrack...it introduced me to some of the indie talent that I was missing out on and brought back some old favorites.   The tracks from The Shins, Thievery Corporation, Coldplay, Simon and Garfunkel, and Zero 7 are my favorites, but none of the songs are bad selections.  However, I would have liked The Postal Service's original "Such Great Heights" included as well (although Iron and Wine's cover works well in the movie).

    2. The Arcade Fire - Funeral: Review pending...

    1. Ambulance LTD - Ambulance LTD: According to some of my sources, they are the it band on the local NYC rock scene (although my friend in a local band on the Lower East Side claims not to have heard of them).  Anyway, since Thanksgiving, I have been unable to stop listening to this album.  Their style is unique but each song has an eerie familiarity that is derived from their wide range of influences.  Congleton (lead) has been influenced by blues, soul, punk, and jazz.  Beckett (drums) and Lysaght (guitar) have backgrounds in jazz and rock.  Dublin (bass) cites metal as a big influence.  Their sound is reminiscent of Velvet Underground, the Kinks, early Stones, White Album era Beatles, and shoegazer rock (i.e. My Bloody Valentine).  Their recent single was "Primitive (The Way I Treat You)" and their next single is "Heavy Lifting", but my favorite tracks are "Anecdote", "Ophelia", "Stay Where You Are", "Stay Tuned", and "Young Urban".  Also, try to find the excellent b-side "Country Gentleman".  They have been touring with The Killers and will be beginning a two month tour of England in 2005.  They'd better swing by DC/Baltimore one of these days.

    Honorable Mention
    ---------------------------------------------------
Elliott Smith - From a Basement on the Hill
    Green Day - American Idiot
    Dios - Dios
Music From The O.C. Vol. 1 and 2
    Snow Patrol - Final Straw
    Eminem - Encore
Snoop Dogg - Rhythm and Gangsta
Badly Drawn Boy - One Plus One Is One
    Air - Talkie Walkie
